Cameron meets Netanyahu at Downing St. amid protests
British Prime Minister David Cameron says his country “remains staunch" in its "defense of Israel".
Cameron made the pledge while meeting with visiting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at 10 Downing Street in London.
Netanyahu is on a two-day visit in London to discuss hosts of issues including Syria and the July nuclear conclusion between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany, also known as the P5+1 group.
Netanyahu’s trip has angered many Britons with a number of them gathered outside Downing Street on Wednesday to demand Netanyahu's arrest for war crimes in the Gaza Strip. Several people were arrested after scuffles broke out between the protesters and police.
More than 108, 000 Britons had signed a petition demanding Netanyahu be arrested when he arrives in London. They want him to be brought to justice for the crimes committed during Israel’s deadly war on Gaza.
Last year, Tel Aviv launched a 50-day war on the besieged coastal territory, killing nearly 2, 200 people, most of them civilians. Thousands more were injured and over 20, 000 thousand houses were damaged during indiscriminate attacks.
The arrest petition secured enough signatures to be considered for a debate in the British parliament. But the Conservative party-led government rejected the bid saying "visiting heads of foreign governments have immunity from legal process, and cannot be arrested or detained.
