Press TV has interviewed Mimi al-Laham, an activist and political commentator, in Australia, to discuss recent revelations by Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, about an American plot to overthrow Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Following is a rough transcription.

Press TV: Just how revealing is this information by Julian Assange?

Laham: It is pretty much the information that has been available since 2010 which is when the US diplomatic cables were leaked onto the Wikileaks website but I suppose Assange is basically highlighting these cables and the level of their importance and I have had a look at them… I don’t know of the specific cables that he has referred to in his book but it seems this William Roebuck who was stationed in Damascus was basically communicating to Washington all the different ways or holes that he believed he could find in trying to overthrow the Syrian government, which includes funding civil society groups, a word they are using interchangeably with agent provocateurs.

It is not very surprising however that the US would want to try to talk to the Syrian government because it has been a government that stands in the way of US hegemony in the region and because of the US’ longstanding support of Israel.

Press TV: So, considering the comments by Assange, how sincere and genuine do you think the US has been when it claims it is fighting the Daesh terrorists in Syria?

Laham: As he stated, they were the ones that fueled the terrorists in the first place in order to overthrow the Syrian government; they have been doing that since 2006 and try to create the Shia-Sunni divide. And if the diplomatic cables are too heavy to go through anyone can have a look at a website called Public Intelligence and look up a document called the US government’s guide to the Syrian people. It lays out quite nicely how the US government views the Syrian people in sectarian eyes and tries to find a way to use sectarianism to divide Syrian people and create a civil war.

So obviously, there is nothing humanitarian or anti-terror about the quest in supposedly defeating ISIL, because they really don’t care about the Syrian people and they are the ones that ignited the flames and that was clear to us all when they supported the Muslim Brotherhood uprising in 2011.
