Iranian Greco-Roman wrestler Yousef Ghaderian has claimed the bronze medal in the men’s 80-kilogram category at the 12th edition of World Wrestling Championships in the United States.

On Tuesday, the 22-year-old Iranian sportsman, who received a bye in the first round of the contests at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, triumphed over his Samoan and South Korean rivals 11-0 and 8-0 respectively in his first two encounters as he marched toward the semi-final round.

He suffered a 3-4 loss from Belarusian Greco-Roman wrestler Viktor Sasunovski in the semi-final, setting up a third place contest between himself and Askhat Dilmukhamedov from Kazakhstan.

Ghaderian downed the Kazakh opponent 2-0 in his last competition to win the bronze.

The gold medal went to Turkish athlete Selcuk Cebi and Belarusian wrestler Viktor Sasunovski took the silver.

Other Iranian Greco-Roman wrestlers, namely Hamid Sourian, 30, Afshin Biabangard and 26-year-old Mehdi Aliyari, staged lackluster performances on Tuesday, and failed to secure the 59-kilogram and 130-kilogram berths in the 2016 Summer Olympics scheduled to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
