Gunmen kill two Pakistani journalists in 24 hours
Two Pakistani journalist have been killed by gunmen over the past 24 hours in the southern port city of Karachi, police say.
In the first assault, which was carried out on Tuesday night, the assailants shot and killed a technician with the private satellite news channel Geo TV after opening fire on his van. The driver of the vehicle also suffered injuries in the attack.
The second attack came on Wednesday morning, when gunmen killed journalist Aftab Alam outside his home. The slain journalist had previously worked with Geo TV.
The connection between the two attacks is still unknown.
Pakistan is ranked as one of the most dangerous countries for journalists in the world.
Last year, one of Geo TV’s senior anchors Hamid Mir was shot and injured in Karachi. The attack sparked anger and protest in the violence-hit country. Mir’s family accused the intelligence agency, the ISI, of being behind the attack.
The growing violence against journalists in Pakistan is attributed to the security situation in the country since it joined the so-called war on terror.
Pakistani journalists have called for insurance policy for journalists and compensation for those who die or are injured in line of duty.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has pledged to provide a secure professional climate for the Pakistani media. The government has announced a decision to form a commission tasked with the protection of journalists.
