One dead, New York governor aide shot during parade
Violence in New York City has left one man dead and a legal aide to New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo in critical condition during a Labor Day Parade.
Carey Gabay, a Harvard-educated first deputy counsel to Cuomo, was walking with his brother along the parade route in Brooklyn on Monday when he was caught in the crossfire between two gangs, according to police officials.
Gabay, 43, was struck in the head, local media reported. He was hospitalized in critical condition, according to the governor's office.
"This was a beautiful man. A sweet man. A man who was giving back to his community," Cuomo told reporters at the parade. “It is so painful, so unnecessary, so sad.”
“It’s the same story almost weekly,” he continued. “Tragedy after tragedy after tragedy.” He said he did not know what it would take for the country “to come to its senses with gun violence.”
The shooting was one of several violent incidents in the neighborhoods surrounding the parade, which included the stabbing death of a 24-year-old man.
No arrests have been made and police have not yet released the victim's name or any more information related to the stabbing.
A string of fatal and non-fatal shootings and stabbings has occurred on and near the parade route in recent years.
The Labor Day Parade, or West Indian Carnival, is an annual celebration held on American Labor Day in the Brooklyn borough of New York City. The parade is a colorful celebration of Caribbean culture, music, style and food.
New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, who attended the parade with his wife, dismissed talk of ending the parade festivities.
Gabay, as well as de Blasio’s wife, are of West Indian (Caribbean) decent.
