Sarah Palin urges immigrants in US to ‘speak American’
Immigrants to the United States should "speak American," former Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin says.
Palin was trying to take a swipe at Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s rival Jeb Bush, who is fluent in Spanish and sometimes speaks in that language on the campaign trail.
She also envisioned a country where every resident speaks the same language, a mother tongue she calls “American.”
“It’s a benefit of Bush to be able to be so fluent, because we have a large and wonderful Hispanic population building America, and that’s a great connection he has with them,” Palin said.
“On the other hand, I think we can send a message and say, ‘You want to be in America, A, you’d better be here legally or you’re out of here. B, when you’re here, let’s speak American.”
She later elaborated, “Let’s speak English, and that’s a kind of a unifying aspect of the nation is the language that is understood by all.”
On Thursday, Bush rebuffed the opinion offered by Trump that people should speak only English in the United States.
Trump’s radical stance on illegal immigration is a hallmark of his bid for the party's nomination in the November 2016 election.
Bush, however, vowed to keep speaking Spanish whenever he feels like it.
