A senior Iranian official has dismissed as completely baseless allegations leveled in Kuwaiti against the Islamic Republic, saying the government in Kuwait City should take proper steps to stop the destructive hype around relations between the two neighbors.

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, who serves as the Iranian deputy foreign minister for Arab and African affairs, said Saturday that those opposing the amicable relations between Iran and Kuwait are behind the current unconstructive acts against Iran.

On September 1, Kuwait charged 24 people, including one Iranian national, with espionage and smuggling explosives, as well as possession of firearms and ammunition with the intention of carrying out acts of aggression against the Arab state. The trial of the alleged cell is expected on September 15 in Kuwait's lower court.

The senior Iranian diplomat said the case is Kuwait's domestic issue, adding that Tehran is only concerned about the security of the Middle East as well as its "brotherly and friendly" neighbor, Kuwait.

In a statement on Thursday, the Iranian embassy in Kuwait dismissed accusations linking Tehran to the cell, saying a “systematic” media campaign is underway to harm the relationship between the two countries.

Amir-Abdollahian said Iran expects the Kuwaiti leadership to adopt a “wise measure” against the continuation of the destructive hype around the case, saying Iran views the security of Kuwait as its own.
