Republicans oppose JCPOA without reading its text: Analyst

Steven D. Kelley says that Republican opponents of the nuclear agreement with Iran haven’t even read its text.

US Secretary of State John Kerry is correct in saying that the next US president stands no chance “to walk away from” the nuclear agreement between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries, former CIA contractor Steven D. Kelley says.

Kelley made the remarks when asked about his views on the future of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which is being reviewed by Congress.

“I cannot see a president willfully taking the United Nations, five other nations who supported us in this negotiation and saying, 'Sorry, we're just going to walk away from this and create a more dangerous situation in the Middle East.' I just don't see that happening,” Kerry told the Huffington Post on Thursday.

Kelley, meanwhile, accused the Republican opponents of the deal of passing laws that they haven’t even read properly.

“The Republicans say it gives too many concessions to Iran and threatens the security of Israel; we are talking about people here who don’t read the text of the laws before they pass them,” he maintained.

“They do this every day for a living, don’t expect any of them to actually have read the text of the P5+1 nuclear agreement with Iran,” he argued.

Iran and the P5+1 group of countries – the US, Britain, France, Russia, China, and Germany – announced the conclusion of nuclear negotiations in Vienna, Austria, on July 14.

So far 38 senators have announced their support for the nuclear agreement, meaning Democrats have garnered enough support to protect the JCPOA in Congress.
