Mother, 4 kids believed to be bound for Syria arrested in UK

CCTV footage recorded Tariq, her kids crossing the security check at London City airport in August.

The Metropolitan police have detained a mother who was thought to have been planning to travel to Syria with her four children.

Counter-terrorism officials arrested 33-year-old Zahera Tariq along with her children after returning to Luton airport on a flight from Istanbul on Thursday night.

The family went missing from their home in Walthamstow, east London, last week. Tariq’s husband and father of her children was still in the UK.

Met police launch inquiry to ascertain the real motive behind Tariq's trip to Turkey

CCTV footage at London City airport found the women and her children flying to Amsterdam on 25 August. The motive behind their journey is not known yet but it was largely speculated that they were on their way to Turkey, a key transit point, before they could head into Syria.

On Tuesday, Turkish authorities confirmed the arrest of the woman with her sons Muhammad, 12, Amaar, 11, Aadid, four and daughter Safiyyah, nine.

According to the Met Police, the woman was detained upon her arrival on the suspicion of abduction of the children. A police inquiry is underway to know her main intention behind making a trip to Turkey.

3 UK teen girls on their way to join Daesh terrorists in Syria

There is a sharp rise in number of people, including many young Britons suspected of travelling to Syria to join the Daesh terrorist group. The number of terrorism-related arrests in Britain has also surged in recent months. Scotland Yard said recently it believed that more than 40 women and girls traveled to Syria in the past year.

More than 700 hundred Britons are said have been fighting along with terrorists in Daesh-controlled parts of Syria and at least 100 among them are thought to be women and girls, some travelling with friends and others with children.
