1 killed, 2 injured near US college in Sacramento

Sacramento City College is on lockdown after an on-campus shooting left one man dead and two other men injured.

A shooting near Sacramento City College in the US state of California has left one person killed and two others wounded.

The shooting, which reportedly happened near a baseball field just before 4 pm on Thursday, claimed the lives of a man and injured two other men.

The conditions of the two victims were not known, but one of them was reportedly shot four times, according to a Sacramento Fire Department statement.

Sacramento City College is now on lockdown with officers searching the area for the suspect who is described as a white or Hispanic male.

According to a student, who witnessed the shooting, the shooter fired at the victims and walked casually toward Freeport Boulevard.

Other witnesses said they heard four or five shots, adding they saw people screaming and running from the area.

Police have provided no further details on the fatal incident.

On average, 87 people die each day as a function of gun violence in the US, with an average of 183 injured, according to the University of Chicago Crime Lab and the Centers for Disease Control.

Murder rates have increased in cities across the United States this year with over 30 cities reporting a rise in violence from a year ago, a report says.

Since the onset of 2015, there has been an average of one mass shooting per day in the United States, according to a website called Mass Shooting Tracker.
