Israeli authorities have put in place a ban that would prevent 40 Palestinian women from entering the al-Aqsa Mosque compound in the Israeli-occupied Old City of al-Quds (Jerusalem) for up to 60 days.

Israeli al-Quds police commander, Avi Bitton, said those barred from entering the sacred site are charged with “causing trouble and damage” in the compound, adding that other Palestinian women would be allowed entry after presenting identity cards.

Bitton further claimed that the recent restrictions were imposed “to prevent any tensions in the area.”

According to Palestinian NGO Wadi Hilweh Information Center, more than 1,000 Israeli settlers and officers forced their way into the al-Aqsa Mosque compound in July.

Head of the center, Jawad Siyam, said 1,130 Israelis stormed the sacred site during the mentioned period; and about "930 Jewish settlers and 200 Israeli" officers forced their way into the mosque compound.

Siyam added that Israeli authorities issued bans for 28 Palestinians, including six women, during the month of July, barring them from entering the holy site for time periods ranging from 15 to 180 days.

The Tel Aviv regime has tried to change the demographic makeup of al-Quds over the past decades by constructing illegal settlements, destroying historical sites and expelling the local Palestinian population.

The al-Aqsa Mosque compound is Islam’s third holiest site after Masjid al-Haram in Mecca and Masjid al-Nabawi in Medina.
