Riyadh attacks on Yemen to backfire: Yemeni activist

Press TV has conducted an interview with Hussain al-Bukhaiti, an activist and political commentator from Sana’a, to get his take on Saudi airstrikes against Yemen.

Following is a rough transcription of the interview.

Press TV: Talk to us about the continued Saudi airstrikes against the people of Yemen. The civilian casualties are continuing to rise by the day and still there is no concrete action on behalf of the international community and the United Nations to stop the attacks.

Bukhaiti: I do not think that the international community will make any move to stop this Saudi aggression against Yemen, because it is a half year now of the Saudi bombardment - and as you mentioned the constant attack on different areas especially the border area - there are reports, as well, today of a new attack using cluster bomb in border area between Sa’ada and Saudi Arabia. And there were as well attacks this morning on Sana’a. And yesterday as well, they targeted the Sana’a airport and targeted military academy northeast Sana’a. And on the top of that we had as well yesterday a suicide bomb attack in a mosque in north Sana’a. And 10 to 15 minutes after that a car bomb exploded in front of that mosque just to obstruct and to kill more people. And we’ve seen that we are under attack from both sides: the Saudi bombardment and the Saudi campaign and war machine, and al-Qaeda as they call themselves now ISIS or Daesh, because they have got now a safe haven in the south. They move freely in the south. Ansarullah has secured many cities and many towns across the south and they have kicked al-Qaeda out of this area, but now al-Qaeda have established a stronghold for example in Aden. They control many districts and they have already just in the last 48 hours killed four southern movement leaders. So, Yemen is under attack from the international community and countries like the US and France, from Saudi Arabia, who give a cover for al-Qaeda. And as well we are under terrorist attack and we have seen an example like that only in Syria. But in Yemen they are involved directly with their planes against Yemen and the Yemeni people.

Press TV: Mr. Bukhaiti, many observers of the situation believe that with the war that Saudi Arabia has carried out against Yemen, not only is it endangering the security of the region but also endangering its own security as well.

Bukhaiti: Of course, because I think the Saudis are thinking that whatever they do in Yemen is not going to reach it and like they did in Syria. But I think they forgot that we are just across the border. And we’ve seen Yemeni army and Yemeni popular community and Ansarullah are targeting many Saudi army bases across the border. And they are in full control of the entire border between Sa’ada, Hajjah and the Saudi border. So, if the security situation will get worse and chaos will spread, the same way they have done in Syria, then this will go directly and it will hurt the Saudis more than the Yemeni army. If terrorists control Yemen, then they will be targeting many areas in Saudi Arabia and we’ve saw already some ISIS attacks in Saudi Arabia.
