Turkey arrests UK family believed to be traveling to Syria

London City Airport

UK police says a family believed to be travelling from London to Syria have been arrested in Turkey.

A mother and her four children disappeared last week from their homes in east London. Security sources believed that they were heading to Syria to join Daesh terrorist militants.

Turkish officials have told UK police that the family members were safe and well.

This is not the first time that Turkey police detain a UK family who are moving to Syria. Back in April, Turkish security forces arrested a British family of six, who were seeking to cross the border into violence-plagued Syria and join the ranks of the Daesh Takfiri militant group.

At least 600 Britons are estimated to have slipped into Syria to wage war against the government of President Bashar al-Assad since 2011.

Turkey has been accused of failing to control its 900-kilometer (560-mile) long border with Syria and allowing terrorists easy passage. Ankara has in turn complained that European police forces have been slow to share information on extremists traveling through the country.
