Israel will lose Iran accord vote in Congress: Ex-Senate candidate

“Israel is going to lose this vote in the United States House and Senate that will take place by September 17, " Dankof says.

Israel and its powerful lobby in the United States will lose the upcoming vote in Congress on the Iran nuclear agreement, says a former US Senate candidate.

“They spent $150 million in an unbelievingly aggressive advertising campaign to get the American public to support their congressmen and senators in voting this deal down,” Mark Dankof told Press TV on Monday.

The Republican critics of the deal, led by the powerful Israel lobby, hoped that the August congressional recess was their best chance to scuttle the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) that was reached on Iran’s nuclear program in mid-July.

However, their aggressive campaign appears to be failing as an increasing number of Democrats are coming out in favor of the accord. So far, only 14 House Democrats and two Senate Democrats have joined the opponents of the nuclear deal.

The fact that 31 Senate Democrats have backed the landmark agreement indicates that “the Israeli lobby is going to lose this one,” Dankof said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addresses a joint meeting of the US Congress on the "danger" of a nuclear agreement with Iran, March 3, 2015.

“It is in the interest of everyone that this agreement be approved with the exception of Benjamin Netanyahu and the most radical elements in the Israeli government and the Israeli lobby in the United States,” he noted.

A group of 75 former US lawmakers sent a letter to Congress on Monday urging its current members to vote in favor of the Iran accord, adding that there is "no viable alternative" to the agreement.

Former Sens. Richard Lugar, Republican of Indiana, and Carl Levin, Democrat of Michigan, are among the signatories of the letter.

“They recognize that the alternative to this agreement and the approval of this agreement is the further political marginalization of the United States internationally… and ultimately a greater danger of a war,” Dankof said of the former lawmakers.

“Israel is going to lose this vote in the United States House and Senate that will take place by September 17, but that is not the last card that they have to play,” he emphasized.

“Israel is fully capable of pulling off a false flag operation to be falsely blamed on Iran,” the analyst concluded.
