EU leaders call for action to defend refugees’ dignity

European Union leaders are calling for action to defend the dignity of refugees, as the bloc continues efforts to cope with the record numbers of people crossing its borders.

Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has urged all member states to contribute to a fairer distribution of asylum-seekers. French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius also slammed some Eastern European countries for refusing to accept more refugees, calling the move against Europe's common values. EU interior and justice ministers are set to meet in Brussels on September 14 to find concrete measures to cope with the escalating refugee crisis. In recent months, Europe has witnessed an influx of refugees who are fleeing war and chaos in their countries including Syria and Libya.
