Turkish police, protesters clash in Istanbul
Turkish police in Istanbul have clashed with protesters who had gathered to protest the deaths of several people in military operation in three towns in the country’s Kurdish-majority southeast.
On Sunday, hundreds of activists organized a protest rally in Istanbul’s Gazi district as a show of solidarity with the Kurdish people.
The protesters reportedly built barricades and threw Molotov cocktails at the police forces, who responded with tear gas.
Demonstrators have been taking to the streets for around a week in support of the victims of the recent clashes between Turkish security forces and members of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) in the cities of Sirnak and Hakkari.
Three young Kurds belonging to the youth wing of the PKK were also killed by Turkish security forces in Silopi.
Turkey has been the scene of violent clashes between security forces and protesters after Ankara started airstrikes against the positions of PKK militants in southern Turkey and northern Iraq in July.
The PKK has been fighting for an autonomous Kurdish region inside Turkey since the 1980s. The conflict has left tens of thousands of people dead. Many countries regard the PKK as a terrorist organization.
