Two separate rocket attacks by Taliban militants have left at least two Afghan children dead and a dozen other civilians injured in the east central province of Maidan Wardak.

The two children were killed after a rocket fired by Taliban militants slammed into a house in Yousufkhil village of Sayed Abad District in the early hours of Sunday.

Separately, more than 12 civilians were injured after another rocket fired by the Taliban militants struck a residential area in Karokhil village of the same district.

The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital to receive treatment. Three of them are in critical condition.

The target of the attacks was reportedly security checkpoints in the troubled region.

Hayatullah Hayat, the governor of Maidan Wardak Province, strongly condemned the Taliban attacks against civilians.

There has been a major surge in violence across Afghanistan over the past months after the Taliban militants vowed to expand attacks against Afghan and foreign forces as part of the militants’ so-called spring offensive in late April.

Afghan security forces have stepped up attacks against Taliban hideouts across the country in recent months.

Also on Sunday, Afghan security forces managed to take back control of a strategic district in the southern province of Helmand from the Taliban militants following days of fierce clashes.

Afghan Deputy Interior Minister General Ayub Salangi said the Afghan soldiers now control Musa Qala, located about 165 kilometers (102 miles) north of the provincial capital, Lashkar Gah.

Afghanistan continues to face violence insecurity nearly 14 years after the US and its NATO allies invaded the country as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror.
