An American sheriff deputy who was killed in a shooting incident has fallen victim because of his uniform, according to Texas police.

Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman linked the killing of Darren Goforth, the county’s deputy sheriff, to recent wave of anti-police brutality protests in the United States and argued that he was targeted for wearing a police uniform.

Goforth had also openly stated his views on the anti-police protests and the imprisonment of African-Americans, something that might have contributed to the motive of the killer.

"We've heard black lives matter; all lives matter. Well cops' lives matter too," Hickman said.

"At any point where the rhetoric ramps up to the point where calculated cold-blooded assassination of police officers happen(s), this rhetoric has gotten out of control," he added.

The Harris County Sheriff’s deputy was shot once in the head and three times in the back on Friday night while investigating the report of a suspicious vehicle near a gas station.

Shannon Miles, the alleged shooter, was taken into police custody on Saturday. Miles faces a capital murder charge and so far there has been no indication of him personally knowing Goforth.

According to statistics released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the number of US police officers killed on duty increased from 27 officers in 2013 to 51 in 2014.
