Iran basketball outfit trounces Chinese Taipei’s at William Jones Cup

The Iranian national men’s basketball team has registered another impressive victory at the 2015 William Jones Cup in Taiwan, defeating the Chinese Taipei B outfit.

The Iranian sportsmen earned their second straight victory in the competitions on Sunday, and overcame their Taiwanese rivals 88-66.

The Iranian squad opened the match at the Xinzhuang Gymnasium in New Taipei City in a dominant fashion to win most of the points in their way to lead at the end of the first quarter 20-9.

Iranian basketball players extended their lead into the second quarter, and managed to beat the opposite side 21-11 at the end of the first half.

The Iranian players kept up the momentum in the third quarter. Taiwanese sportsmen tried to close the gap but ultimately fell just short, and the Iranians chalked up a 32-20 victory.

Taiwanese basketball players made use of their strengths and resources in the final quarter, and rolled to a 26-15 win. The result, however, was of no avail since the Iranian team sealed the final victory.

Sajjad Mashayekhi scored 20 points for Iran to stand on top of the score sheet. Iran’s Saber Mohammad Hassanzadeh and Hamed Afagh added 16 points each. Chou Po and Chien Wei-Ju led the Taiwanese side with 13 points apiece.

On Saturday, the Iranian team had defeated South Korea 77-46 in an awe-inspiring match.

Iranian sportsmen will return to action on Monday to play against Japan.

The 2015 William Jones Cup started in Taiwan on August 29 and will run until September 6. The event is a top-level international basketball tournament of FIBA Asia.
