Using nukes on Afghanistan 'silly' idea: Analyst

“They certainly would not want to use nuclear weapons as a means to defeat Afghanistan,” said Olivier.

The idea of using nuclear weapons against Afghanistan, as reportedly examined by the Bush administration following the September 11, 2001 attacks, was a “silly” plan, says an analyst.

Art Olivier, a US vice presidential candidate in the 2000 election, made the remarks in an interview on Sunday when asked about a report that the nuclear option against Afghanistan was one of the possibilities examined by the United States after the 9/11 attacks.

Michael Steiner, a former political adviser to Germany’s then-Chancellor Gerhard Schroder, said in a report published by the Der Spiegel website on Saturday that, “They had really played through all possibilities,” including nuclear bombs.

“I don’t know if it was really serious that they would use nuclear weapons against Afghanistan, it would be silly because Afghanistan didn’t have any kind of military that could match the United States military,” Olivier told Press TV.

“In fact, the Taliban currently is supported through ISI, which is the intelligence agency of Pakistan, and Pakistan of course gets foreign aid from the United States, so without money from the United States we certainly would not have anybody to fight in Afghanistan,” he said.

“They certainly would not want to use nuclear weapons as a means to defeat Afghanistan,” he stressed.

“The only time nuclear weapons were used in war was against Japan, and that was in August of 1945, even though Japan had already submitted their terms of surrender to General [Douglas] MacArthur in January of 1945,” he continued.

“Nuclear weapons have never been used as a defensive tool and even as a means to win a war. It’s never been necessary and it will never be necessary,” Olivier concluded.

According to US officials, the 9/11 attacks were, carried out by al-Qaeda terrorists. However, some experts charge that rogue elements within the US government orchestrated or at least encouraged the 9/11 attacks in order to accelerate “the US war machine.”
