Pakistan air force strikes kill 14 militants near Afghan border
Pakistan says strikes by its air force have killed at least 14 militants near the border with Afghanistan.
The airstrikes on Saturday, which are part of an ongoing offensive against the pro-Taliban militants, targeted hideouts in Shawal area of the North Waziristan tribal region.
A statement released by the Pakistani military said, "In precise air strikes in Shawal, 14 terrorists were killed today."
On August 20, more than 50 militants were killed in separate clashes with the Pakistani army in the country’s restive regions of South and North Waziristan.
The Pakistani army has been waging a full-scale operation against militant hideouts in North Waziristan since June 2014, when a deadly militant raid on the Karachi International Airport ended the government’s faltering peace talks with the pro-Taliban militants.
In one of the deadliest militant attacks, on December 16, 2014, a group of pro-Taliban militants stormed an army-run school in Pakistan's northwestern city of Peshawar and killed about 150 people, including 132 students. Some 120 students were also injured in the raid.
The tribal regions on Pakistan’s border with Afghanistan have been a hideout for militant groups over the past years. The al-Qaeda and Taliban militants use the mountainous border areas to launch attacks in both countries.
