‘UK Twitter account to run against ISIL propaganda’

The British government has launched a Twitter account to ‘counter’ propaganda campaigns by the terrorist group of Daesh (ISIL).

The ‘UK against ISIL’ account has been launched by the British Foreign Office to provide “updates on the UK government’s ongoing work to defeat ISIL.”

The government tweeted a promotional video on the country’s role in combating the terrorist group that mostly operates in Syria, Iraq and Libya.

“We are militarily removing territory from ISIL. We are cutting off ISIL finances, reducing the number of fighters travelling to join ISIL and providing humanitarian aid,” it said, adding, “To protect Britons at home we have disrupted ISIL-linked terror plots, stopped people wanting to do harm from reaching the UK, worked with the internet industry to remove extremist propaganda and arrested 203 people for Syria-related terror offences.”

This is while John Rees with the Stop the War Coalition says the Western policies have in some ways assisted the rise of militant groups like Daesh.

Back in July, British PM David Cameron said his country might target the Daesh terrorist group in Libya and Syria if Britons or the UK were threatened by it.

"If there is a threat to Britain or to our people or our streets and we can stop it by taking immediate action against that threat, then I as Prime Minister will always want to try to take that action and that's the case whether that problem is emanating from Libya, from Syria or anywhere else," he said.

The comments followed revelations that British pilots have secretly been involved in bombarding targets in Syria.

The current Tory government is reportedly paving the way for a new parliament vote on military intervention in Syria, which it hopes to win by securing Labour support. A vote will not come until this autumn, by which time the opposition party will have a new leader.
