World soccer stars to play Iran’s in charity rendezvous

A stellar battalion of the world’s former soccer giants is to play its Iranian version in a confrontation whose proceeds are to go to MS sufferers.

The World Stars squad members arrived at the Imam Khomeini International Airport in the Iranian capital on Thursday and Friday.

Tehran’s Azadi Stadium is to host the clash later on Friday.

Among others, the world team comprises captain Michel Salgado, Luis Figo, Roberto Carlos, Fabio Cannavaro, Fernando Hierro, Fernando Couto, Vitor Baia, Bodo Illgner, Clarence Seedorf, Patrick Kluivert, Steve McManaman, Fernando Morientes, Marcel Desailly, Gaizka Mendieta, Edgar Davids, Jari Litmanen, Christian Karembeu, Boudewijn Zenden, and Santiago Solari.

Iranian soccer giants, who accompanied the Iranian national team during 1998 and 2006 World Cups, such as Ali Daei and Ali Karimi, are expected to fight on the Iranian side.

Interviewed after reaching Tehran, Desailly said, “I haven’t seen Iran so far,” adding, “Football makes us all come together. Football is for friendships.”
