Palestinians should try hard to revive their rights: Activist

Press TV has conducted an interview with Paul Larudee, co-founder of the Free Palestine Movement from Berkeley, to get his view on Palestinians’ proposal to the United Nations to fly Palestine’s flag at the UN headquarters in New York.

The following is a rough transcription of the interview.

Press TV: How significant a symbolic move would this be?

Larudee: Well, it’s definitely symbolic. It’s not going to bring liberation to Palestine, but Mahmoud Abbas is big on symbolic measures and the trappings of statehood without actually necessarily having a state. It would be nicer to have Palestinian leadership that was more active in actually liberating Palestine and providing equal rights to Palestinians that is for Palestinians to have the same rights as Israelis, but there’s no sign that there’s any pressure for this.

Press TV: A lot of people, Mr. Larudee, as you can imagine would argue that a least this is a positive step and right direction. What more do you think needs to be done to actually make these concrete steps forward?

Larudee: It’s not a negative step. Palestinians can be proud to see their flag [is] flying with the flags of other nations. There’s nothing wrong with it. But for it to be considered a significant step, it would have to advance the causes that Palestinians are living for in their daily lives to have freedom, to have sovereignty, to have their rights respected, to get their land back, to return to their homes, all of these things. This should be the center of discussion and in order to achieve that they have to make life very uncomfortable for Israel. I don’t think that flying a couple of flags at the United Nations is going to make life very uncomfortable for Israelis, but the Israelis would put on the good show protesting it in order to make Palestinians feel like that they’re doing something that annoys Israel, but that’s what we’re going to get.
