White House slams lack of tougher gun control laws in US
The White House has criticized lack of tougher gun control laws in the United States, calling on Congress to adopt proper measures in this regard.
White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest made the remarks on Wednesday, after a gunman shot dead two journalists during a live TV program in the state of Virginia.
“This is another example of gun violence that is becoming all too common in communities large and small all across the United States,” Earnest told reporters.
He said there are “common sense” steps Congress could take to decrease gun violence in the US without infringing on the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Americans.
“The thoughts and prayers of everyone at the White House are with the families of those who were killed,” he noted.
The suspect, identified as Vester Lee Flanagan died from a self-inflicted wound on Wednesday in a hospital in northern Virginia.
Flanagan, 41, is suspected of killing colleagues Alison Parker, 24, and photographer Adam Ward, 27, during a live broadcast in Roanoke, Virginia on Wednesday morning.
A third target, Vicki Gardner, an employee of the local chamber of commerce who was being interviewed, was also injured. She is reportedly in stable condition in hospital.
The motivation of the killing is not clear yet; however, Flanagan posted videos of the shooting on social media, saying one of his victims had "made racist comments." A Twitter account under the suspect’s name was suspended after it posted a video of the killings.
The United States has been grappling with an increasing number of gun-related deaths over the past couple of years.
The government’s efforts to impose tougher gun control laws have so far failed to produce results.
