Press TV has interviewed Kevin Barret, an author and political commentator in Madison, and Robert Evans, a former Member of the European Parliament in London, to discuss the plight of asylum-seekers in European countries.

Barret says the influx of refugees to Europe is the result of destabilization programs in countries like Libya, Syria and Iraq, planned by "colonial" and "imperial" powers in the West that are trying to project their might.

“I think the elite in Europe and the elite in the US are following a conscious policy of divide and conquer by sowing chaos and polarization,” he notes.

He also accuses dominant neoconservatives in the West of orchestrating coups to seize power in other countries and extract their resources and ultimately keep them from gaining power.

Barret then calls on Western leaders to change their strategies and favor “stability” instead of endless aggressive wars and “Balkanization” plans that will displace more people. Because, if this trend continues, he warns, “conflicts” and “civil wars” will sweep Europe itself.

Evans for his part says that destabilization in countries such as Libya that were subject to “ill-judged” foreign intervention was not “deliberate” and it was rather “incompetence” and “misguided” strategies on the part of the European leaders that caused it.

“They just let things happen without considering the consequences of their actions and then the result has been large numbers of people seeking asylum in Europe,” the former MEP argues.
