German FM to visit Iran early October for talks on nuclear accord
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier is to travel to Iran in October for talks on the nuclear accord, which was struck between Tehran and the P5+1 group of countries, including Berlin, earlier in the year.
The top German diplomat made the announcement at the country’s Foreign Ministry on Monday during a conference, which was also attended by the heads of German diplomatic delegations, IRNA reported. The trip would be the first such visit in more than a decade.
Steinmeier, who had previously billed the agreement as “historic”, said it could provide an opportunity for the resolution of other conflicts in the Middle East, including the one in Syria.
He also said the nuclear agreement has improved security in the Middle East and proven that ongoing disputes could be resolved in a peaceful way.
German Foreign Ministry spokesman Martin Schaefer also said that the recent conclusion of the nuclear talks with Iran was a "good occasion" to restore Germany's traditionally close ties with the country, The Associated Press reported.
On July 14, Iran and the P5+1 countries – the United States, Britain, France, China and Russia plus Germany – finalized the text of an agreement, dubbed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), in the Austrian capital of Vienna.
The JCPOA turned into an international document after the UN Security Council on July 20 unanimously endorsed a resolution under which the International Atomic Energy Agency will continue to verify Iran’s compliance with its nuclear-related commitments under the agreement.
Five days following the conclusion of the talks, German Economy and Energy Minister Sigmar Gabriel travelled to Iran at the head of a high-ranking delegation on a three-day visit.
While on the visit, Gabriel said Berlin was after setting up “lasting and stable” economic ties with Iran.
