Russia denies reports of delivering 6 MiG fighter jets to Syria
Russia has denied reports that it has provided Syria with Mikoyan MiG-31 fighter jets, adding that it has no plans to do so in the future, either.
On Friday, the head of the Russian MiG Corporation rejected Turkish media reports that Russia had delivered six supersonic interceptor jets to Syria as part of a contract inked between the two sides in 2007.
“We have not delivered this [type of] aircraft to Syria and are not going to supply them there,” Sergei Korotkov said.
On August 16, Turkey’s English-language website BGN News reported that six Russian Mikoyan MiG-31 warplanes had been delivered at the Mezze Military Airbase near the Syrian capital city of Damascus under a 2007 contract, adding that the deal further obligates Moscow to deliver two more jets to Syria.
The Turkish website had said that the delivery was part of Russia’s plan to boost the military capabilities of the countries that are at the forefront of the battle against Daesh (ISIL) in the region.
Back in 2014, Moscow provided Iraq with Mi-28 attack helicopters to help the Arab country’s military against Daesh militants.
Syria has been facing a foreign-backed militancy – including by Daesh terrorists – since 2011.
The Daesh militants, who currently control areas across Syria as well as northern and western Iraq, have been carrying out horrific acts of violence, including public decapitations, against Iraqi and Syrian communities such as Shias, Sunnis, Kurds and Christians.
