US President Barack Obama’s disapproval rating is on the rise amid a sense among Americans that his foreign and domestic policies are leading the country in the wrong direction, according to a new poll.

The CNN/ORC poll released on Friday found that 51 percent of people in the US now say they disapprove of how Obama is handling the presidency and 47 approve.

That is a negative shift since last month, when 49 percent approved and 47 percent disapproved.

The majority of Americans also disapprove of the way Obama is handling the economy and foreign affairs, as 52 percent say Obama policies are moving the country in the wrong direction.

The Democratic US president fares worst on his handling of the Daesh terrorist group operating in Iraq and Syria, with 62 percent disapproving of how Obama is dealing with ISIL.

The Republican Party is also viewed unfavorably by most Americans, according to the poll, which shows 54 percent have negative views towards the GOP, up from 49 percent in May.

Furthermore, 55 percent say the policies being proposed by Republican leaders in Congress would take the US in the wrong direction versus only 39 percent who think they would take the country in the right direction.

Asked how well things are going in the country today, 52 percent of Americans say badly, emphasizing that the negative shift that emerged in a May CNN/ORC poll has continued.
