US Congressman Rep. Jerrold Nadler has announced that he would vote in favor of the conclusion of Iran nuclear negotiations to become the first New York Jewish Democrat to support the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

“After carefully studying the agreement and the arguments and analyses from all sides, I have concluded that, of all the alternatives, approval of the JCPOA, for all its flaws, gives us the best chance of stopping Iran from developing a nuclear weapon,” he said in a statement on Friday.

“Accordingly, I will support the agreement and vote against a Resolution of Disapproval,” Nadler added.

Congress is scheduled to vote on the July 14 agreement next month.

Republican lawmakers have expressed their opposition to the deal, but President Barack Obama is hopeful that his fellow Democratic allies in both chambers support him.

Lawmakers are expected to reject the accord, but it would take a two-thirds vote in both the House and Senate to override a presidential veto.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged Jewish leaders to disapprove the agreement.

Meanwhile, Democratic Senator Robert Menendez and Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, an influential Jewish Democrat, said they would vote against the agreement.

The number of undecided Democrats, however, is large enough to invite varying scenarios for next month’s decisive vote.

In a letter to Congress on August 19, Obama told the Republican-dominated Congress that the military option against Iran will remain on the table for several years.

“Should Iran seek to dash toward a nuclear weapon, all of the options available to the United States — including the military option — will remain available through the life of the deal and beyond,” Obama said.
