The campaign of one of the Labour Party leadership contenders has raised the alarm over what he calls Tories infiltration in the upcoming election.

Andy Burnham’s campaign director has called for an urgent meeting into “large-scale” infiltration of Tories into the Labour Party leadership contest.

In a letter to Iain McNicol, Labour’s general secretary, Michael Dugher warned that thousands of Conservatives may be planning to vote in the election.

"This suggests the 121,000 registered supporters could include several thousand Tory infiltrators, as well as supporters of other parties seeking to have a vote in the election," Dugher wrote.

Labour Party officials say 400,000 new people have registered to vote in the leadership race.

There are growing fears that infiltrators from other parties have signed up to disrupt the contest.

Jeremy Corbyn, Andy Burnham, Yvette Cooper and Liz Kendall are vying in the race for Labour Party leadership.

Polls suggest that anti-austerity candidate Jeremy Corbyn is the front-runner.

According to a recent YouGov poll, Corbyn is expected to win 53 per cent of the vote - more than double the support of the next closest candidate.

Ballot papers have already been sent out and must be returned by 10 September. The final result is to be announced on 12 September
