US military campaign against Daesh ‘cynical’: Ex-CIA contractor

The US military campaign against the ISIL terrorist group is a “cynical” effort to defeat the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, a former CIA and NSA contractor says.

The US military campaign against the Daesh terrorist group is a “cynical” effort to defeat the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, a former CIA and NSA contractor says.

“When the US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter calls on Turkey to ‘do more’ in the fight against Daesh [or] ISIL militants in Syria, this seems like a very cynical thing to say considering that Turkey is providing logistical training and support and safe passage to these fighters to go into Syria,” said Steven D Kelley.

“Perhaps the United States feels that Turkey needs to devote more airpower so as to take some of the attention away from the fact that the United States is using this de facto no-fly zone for the purposes of trying to defeat Assad,” Kelley told Press TV on Friday from California.

“So these are lies, this is more of the same lies and non-sense,” he added.

The former CIA contractor said if Washington was sincere in its fight against ISIL, it would have confronted Ankara for bombing Kurdish forces, which are one of the most effective groups battling Daesh.

Carter told a Pentagon news conference Thursday that the Turkish government needs to “do more” to fight ISIL, particularly by better controlling its border with Syria where new ISIL recruits and supplies usually cross,

"They need to join the [air strikes] and they need to work more on controlling their border. And we've made that clear," Carter said. "It's overdue, because it's a year into the campaign, but they're indicating some considerable effort now."

Since September 2014, a US-led coalition has been pounding purported ISIL positions inside Syria without any authorization from Damascus or a UN mandate.

Terrorists operating in Syria have long enjoyed the support of certain regional countries, including Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Daesh is notorious for its barbarity, heinous atrocities, and sacrilegious acts and the militants have committed gross human rights violations and war crimes in areas they control, particularly in Libya, Syria, and Iraq.
