Press TV has conducted an interview with Vernellia Randall, a professor at the University of Dayton, for her take on the St. Louis police chief’s defense of Wednesday's fatal shooting by police officers.

The following is a rough transcription of the interview.

Press TV: It’s certainly hard to get the truth, isn’t it, professor, at this point when obviously the police’s account is so different from what people believe of what happened?

Randall: Yes, I think one of the things that’s been happening in this country is that what the police says happened and what later is shown and happened can often be so different that those of us in the African American community have no trust any more in police account of a shooting. And so, that getting at the bottom of things is very difficult especially when the police withhold information like videos and witnesses from the community.

Press TV: Right so then, for yourself as a respected academic of the community, what do you see as a solution going forward? How do we get over this mistrust?

Randall: Well, first of all, I think that there has to be real accountability for the police, for instance, I think that any police that shoots someone should immediately be suspended without pay and that only after it’s been proven that it was justified that they should be reinstated. I think that prosecutors they need to get rid of grand juries. So, that the evidence is put before the community and can be seen by the community instead of the six juries, grand juries of secret. And so, you never know what’s being said. I think that there’s not going be trust of the police until police are tried and convicted of shooting of unarmed black people and unarmed not just black people. The reality is that black has a highest number of unarmed people are being shot, but every group Hispanics, native Americans, whites are being shot unarmed over 700 so far, 700 people shot are injured by police so far. So, I think that there has to be true accountability and there is none now.
