Israel deploys Iron Dome over prisoner death fears
Israel has deployed a battery of Iron Dome missile system in the occupied Palestinian territories for fear of possible attacks from Gaza amid deterioration of the health conditions of a Palestinian hunger striking prisoner.
Israeli media said Thursday that Tel Aviv has rushed to deploy its missile interception system near the southern port city of Ashdod as health conditions of Mohammed Allan, a Palestinian prisoner who has refused food for more than 65 day, get worse.
Moreover, the Israeli army placed a second anti-missile battery near the city of Beersheba.
It came after the Islamic Jihad in Gaza threatened a harsh response if Allan, a member of the resistance movement, dies while in Israel's custody.
Palestinian sources said Allan fell into a coma again on Thursday, but some reports said he has regained consciousness.
Israel on Wednesday suspended the administrative order for Allan’s detention, but ordered him to remain in hospital pending a final decision on his case.
Allan was arrested in November 2014 after Israelis claimed that they had amassed intelligence proving Islamic Jihad is planning attacks on their positions.
The hunger striker emerged of a previous coma on Tuesday only to give Israel 24 hours to resolve his case or see renewed hunger strike. He warned that he would reject any treatment and would even stop drinking water.
Allan's death is feared to trigger escalation of violence in both Gaza and the West Bank.
Israeli officials say they will lift Allan’s administrative detention altogether if it is discovered that he has suffered an “irreversible” brain damage.
Israel suffered huge international backlash over its 51-day brutal attacks on Gaza last summer, which killed more than 2,500 people in the besieged coastal enclave. More than 60 Israeli military personnel also died during the conflict.
