Menendez denounced as warmonger over Iran agreement
US Democratic Senator Robert Menendez has been denounced as a “warmonger” after he came out against the Iran nuclear agreement.
A group supporting the agreement reached between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries -- the United States, Britain, France, China, Russia and Germany – in Vienna last month blasted Menendez on Tuesday.
“Senator Menendez has done more in the last two years than any other Democrat to beat the drums for war with Iran,” said Zack Malitz, campaign manager at CREDO Action, in a statement.
The New Jersey Democrat announced his opposition to the agreement on Tuesday, vowing to oppose it in defiance of President Barack Obama, who is trying to gather enough support among Democrats to prevent Congress from scuttling it.
The Republican-led Congress is reviewing the nuclear accord and will vote on it in mid-September.
“Senator Menendez clearly wants the United States to go to war with Iran," Malitz said.
The statement was accompanied by a picture of Menendez with "warmonger" stamped across it in orange.
Menendez is the second Democratic senator who opposed with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), under which Iran has been recognized by the United Nations as a nuclear power and will continue with its uranium enrichment program.
Two weeks ago, Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, an influential Jewish Democrat, said he would vote against the agreement.
The number of undecided Democrats, however, is large enough to invite varying scenarios for next month’s decisive vote.
Republicans still need many more Democrats to break with Obama on the agreement. Twenty Democrats in the Senate have so far announced that they support the agreement.
