A new book reveals the British queen spoke of ‘greased brakes’ in Diana’s car upon hearing of the late princess’s road accident.
The queen’s first reaction to the news of Princess Diana’s car accident was that “someone must have greased the brakes,” that is according to royal biographer Ingrid Seward’s new book, ‘An Intimate Portrait of the Queen in Her Own Words.’
Diana was killed in Paris in August 1997 while traveling along with her boyfriend Dodi Fayed, the son of Egyptian billionaire Mohamed al-Fayed.
Seward wrote in the Daily Mail that “at first it was thought that, though the car crash in the Pont de l’Alma tunnel was serious, Diana had not been killed.”
“According to one witness present when the queen heard the initial news, she mused out loud: ‘Someone must have greased the brakes'.”
Diana’s death sparked national mourning, with the queen facing public criticism for not leaving her holiday retreat at Balmoral and returning to London immediately.
People were also dismayed to find the royal refusal to fly a flag at half mast at Buckingham Palace over the fatal incident.
The latest book claims the British queen was at first ‘very fond’ of Princess Diana, writing to a friend that “she is one of us.”
But Seward said as the princess became nervous and the queen’s concerns about the increased press attention grew, their relationship turned cold.
