In recent years, existing rifts among Muslims have widened. Political and social conflicts have gripped Muslim societies with occasional spells of violence taking place.

Ethnic, sectarian and political differences have been exacerbated. Key actors in the West have exploited these differences to the detriment of all Muslims with severe repercussions in the area of the economy.

Shaykh Maytham al-Salman has noted that “There are forces that keep the tension alive in order to get a bigger piece of the cake.”

Colonial rule initially divided Muslims in various ways, including installing one ethnic or religious group in power at the expense of other ethnic and religious communities.

During the 20th century, the rise of neo-colonialism continued the process of dividing Muslims in a new set of nation-states which has weakened their ability to unite and resist external intervention.

In this episode we ask: how can Muslims regain unity?
