US seeks to eliminate governments opposing American hegemony: Analyst
The long-standing US foreign policy in the Middle East has been to topple governments opposed to Western dominance and replace them with puppet regimes by fueling terrorists groups in the region, a political analyst from Virginia says.
The primary objective of the United States is to eliminate governments and movements in the region that oppose American hegemony, said Keith Preston, chief editor and director of Attack the System, a website dedicated to encouraging revolt against domestic and foreign US government policies.
“They want to undermine and destabilize a government like that of [Syrian] President [Bashar] Assad who opposes American imperialism and that’s why they’re supporting rebels inside the country,” Preston told Press TV on Thursday.
Washington has fueled extremist movements in the Middle East for decades to undermine countries with an anti-American stance, he added.
Preston said the US is trying to escalate its involvement in the war against the ISIL terrorist group in Iraq and Syria in ways that undermine genuine forces fighting the group.
The US military launched its first manned airstrikes against ISIL targets from the Incirlik Air Base in Turkey on Wednesday.
Turkish fighter jets were not involved in US airstrikes on Wednesday, Turkish military sources said.
Last month, Turkey agreed to open its strategically important bases to the US-led coalition, a major policy shift after years of reluctance to take a frontline role against ISIL.
The US-led coalition has been conducting airstrikes against ISIL in Syria and Iraq since last year. But it has been criticized for causing civilian casualties and failure to stop ISIL advances.
Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since March 2011. The United States and its regional allies -- especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey -- are supporting the militants operating inside the country.
