A newly published poll suggests that anti-austerity Labour Party leadership contender is set to win more than 50% of votes in the upcoming election.

According to a YouGov poll, Corbyn would poll 53 percent, doubling his lead over the past week. He is also expected to secure a first-round victory without needing to count the second preferences of voters.

Meanwhile, former Labour communications director Alistair Campbell, has called on voters to choose “anyone but Corbyn.”

“I agree with Alan Johnson that what he called the madness of flirting with the idea of Corbyn as leader has to stop,” he wrote.

Now a British political analyst living in New York believes that the attacks on Jeremy Corbyn by major Labour figures will be “counterproductive”.

“When Peter Mandelson or Tony Blair speak against him, it rallies public support for him,” Ian Williams told Press TV’s UK Desk on Tuesday.

“They are terrified of him winning because he reverses all of the damage they have done to the Labour Party for the last 20 years,” he added.

Jeremy Corbyn enjoys huge grassroots popularity.

His anti-austerity message seems to have struck a chord with many public sector workers who feel he is the best choice to move the Labour party forward.

However, some reports suggest that mainstream Labour MPs are planning a coup against him if he does manage to win the Labour leadership race.

Labour leadership vote is expected to kick off in mid August with final results scheduled to be released on September 12.
