UNSC adopts resolution setting up Syria chemical weapons probe
The UN Security Council has unanimously approved a resolution that would set up a panel to identify who’s behind deadly chlorine gas attacks in Syria.
All 15 members of the Security Council voted in favor of the resolution. The document gives a panel, made up of a team of experts, full access to all locations in Syria. It also allows collecting material and interviewing witnesses. The move is meant to identify individuals, entities, groups, or governments who organized and sponsored the use of chemical weapons or any other toxic chemicals in Syria. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon now has 20 days to set up a team of experts. The panel will be jointly working with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. The panel is expected to present its first findings to the council 90 days after work begins.
