Muscat and Damascus have agreed to step up joint efforts for bringing an end to four years of conflict gripping Syria, media reports say.

Oman's Foreign Minister Yusuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah and his Syrian counterpart Walid al-Muallem held a meeting in the Omani capital on Thursday to discuss "several regional and international topics of common interest,” Oman News Agency (ONA) reported.

Syria’s official SANA news agency also reported that the two top diplomats agreed "that now is the time to unite the efforts to end this (Syrian) crisis.”

"The two sides agreed to continue cooperation and coordination to achieve the shared goals of their peoples and governments," SANA said.

Meanwhile, Syria's Al-Watan daily reported that  Muallem's Thursday visit to Oman, which was made at the official invitation of Abdullah, was his "first visit to an Arab state in nearly four years."

The newspaper said a meeting between top diplomats from Iran, Syria and Saudi Arabia is likely to be held in the Omani capital.

Earlier this week, Muallem made a two-day visit to Tehran where he met with Iranian officials and Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visiting special envoy for the Middle East and Africa, Mikhail Bogdanov.

Syria has been fighting against massive foreign-sponsored militancy since 2011, which has reportedly left over 240,000 people dead, including 12,000 children, so far.

This is while some Western governments and their regional allies are widely accused of contributing to the rise of terrorist groups operating against the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
