Syrian FM arrives in Iran for key talks

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem has arrived in Tehran to join trilateral talks with Iranian officials and Russian President Vladimir Putin's special envoy.

Muallem is expected to sit down with Mikhail Bogdanov, the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister and Putin's special envoy for the Middle East and Africa, in Tehran on Tuesday.

The Syrian minister is set to hold discussions with Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Wednesday on the latest regional and international developments.

On Tuesday, Bogdanov held talks with Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian on regional developments and ways to resolve the conflict in Syria politically.

In an interview with Iran's Arabic-language news channel, al-Alam, on Sunday, Amir-Abdollahian said Iran and Russia share stances on Syria.

Reiterating Iran's unflinching support for its allies, he said Tehran would continue consulting regional countries with a view to finding a "democratic approach" to the crisis in Syria.

Muallem’s trip to Iran comes after the UN special envoy to Syria, Staffan de Mistura, paid a visit to Tehran in late July and held talks with Iranian foreign minister and Amir-Abdollahian.
