US police chiefs discuss rising homicide rates

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier addresses police chiefs from across the US on Monday, August 3, 2015.

Police chiefs from major cities in the United States have met in Washington D.C. to discuss the dramatic rise in violent crime in the country.

The meeting of the Major Cities Chiefs Association, which was held on Monday, was also attended by some prosecutors.

“The goal of the summit is to identify potential gaps and propose solutions that will help us stop this escalating violence,” said Washington Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy Lanier, the organizer of the meeting.

"What it appears is that there needs to be some [solutions] nationwide.  Not tactics, strategies, right?  So there's got to be some immediate strategy implementation and some long-term strategy implementation," she added.

US cities have recently faced an upturn in violent crime after it dropped starting in the 1990s to half-century lows in 2013.

Some large cities, including Washington, Baltimore and Chicago, have been the scene of deadly shootings over the past few months.

In Washington, 87 homicides have been recorded so far this year, up from 69 in the same period in 2014.

Baltimore had 45 homicides just in July, which was the highest monthly total since 1972. 42 killings were recorded when its homicide rate began to soar in May.

Over 1,600 Americans have been struck in shootings in Chicago since the beginning of this year, 100 more than for the same period last year.

In Milwaukee, 47 homicides were recorded just in the first half of this year, two times as many for the same period in 2014.

“In the major cities, of course, you have a lot of issues with drugs and gangs and violence,” said Richard Beary, the president of the International Association of Chiefs of Police. “And then throw in the mental health, and throw in the availability of guns, and here we are.”

Over 6,000 people have been killed and over 13,000 people injured by gun in the United States since January 1, 2015, according to the Gun Violence Archive, a not for profit corporation that provides information about gun-related violence.

According to a new report, gun production in the United States has more than doubled under the administration of President Barack Obama.
