Over 30 people have been killed after a Syrian military aircraft crashed on a market while bombing Takfiri militants in the northwestern Idlib province, a monitoring group says.

"It was flying at a low altitude when it had mechanical failure" over the town of Ariha, said Rami Abdel Rahman, the director of the so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, on Monday.

"It destroyed the entire market, as well as residential buildings near the market," said a local witness.

On January 18, some 35 Syrian troops were killed after an army cargo plane crashed due to bad weather in Idlib.

The ISIL Takfiri militants overran Ariha in May, rendering most of Idlib province into terrorist hands.

Syria has been facing a massive foreign-sponsored militancy for the past four years. According to the UK-based monitoring group, the conflict has reportedly killed an estimated 230,000 people so far.
