Man shot to death outside courthouse in Mississippi

A man has been shot to death in front of a courthouse in Mississippi as he arrived to hear his charges.

A man has been shot and killed in front of a courthouse in a Mississippi suburb as he arrived for a hearing on drug charges against him, according to police.

The shooting took place outside the Madison County circuit courthouse in Canton Monday morning.

Police said the gunman turned himself in to authorities after shooting Kendrick Brown at point-blank range.

Brown was shot once in the chest with a semiautomatic handgun and died at the scene, police said.

There was a heavy police presence at the small criminal courthouse, with police using metal detectors and sifting through pine needles.

A report by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has shown that over 11,000 people are murdered with a firearm each year in the US, and more than 20,000 others commit suicide using one.

Gun production in the United States has more than doubled under US President Barack Obama, a new report has found.

The report by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives comes as Obama has tried to expand background checks and impose new restrictions on guns following a series of high-profile mass shootings in the country.
