The top prosecutor of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has referred 41 people to trial after charging them with plotting to carry out terrorist attacks aimed at toppling the government.

Prosecutor Salem Saeed Kubaish said in a statement released by state-run WAM news agency on Sunday that a group identified as “Shabab al-Manarah” planned to carry out anti-government attacks in order to establish an “extremist state” in the country.

According to Kubaish, the members of the group had formed committees to recruit youths and to provide training on the use of firearms and explosive devices. The group is also accused of attempting to promote their ideology on the Internet.

He added that the group had a “Takfiri” ideology, referring to the dogma of ISIL and like-minded militants operating in Syria and Iraq, among other places.

The group will also be charged with raising funds in order to illegally obtain weapons and explosives, and also with raising money for “foreign terrorist groups” in exchange for their assistance.

Abu Dhabi’s The National newspaper said the trial of the 41 individuals is expected to start on August 24.

The statement did not include details regarding the nationalities of all of those charged, only saying a number had been Emirati.
