News in Brief

1. Turkey says Kurdish fighters have targeted a police station in the eastern province of Agri near the border with Iran. Two soldiers are dead and over 30 others wounded. According to Turkish officials, Kurdistan Workers Party fighters used two tons of explosives to attack the station.

2. Israeli forces storm the al-Aqsa Mosque compound in the occupied East Jerusalem al-Quds. The troops forced their way into the site, preventing Palestinian worshipers from entering the compound. The al-Aqsa Mosque has been the scene of tensions in the past few days.

3. Saudi warplanes continue to bomb Yemen. In the latest attack, Harad district of the northwestern Hajjah province was pounded. Several areas in Ma’rib and Saʼada provinces were struck earlier. At least 4,900 people have been killed since Saudi Arabia launched its military campaign against Yemen in March.

4. Yemen’s Ansarullah fighters and allied army units have fired several rockets at a military base in Saudi Arabia’s Jizan region. Yemeni forces reportedly gained full control of a military base in the southwestern border region on Saturday, during raids that also killed at least three Saudi troops and wounded eight others.

5. The United Arab Emirates says it will try 41 people for plotting to create an ISIL-style caliphate in the Kingdom. The Emirati and foreign suspects are accused of trying to seize power by forming a Takfiri group. This is the first indication of the ISIL ideology spreading to the UAE.

6. US Secretary of State is in Egypt as part of his Middle East tour. John Kerry has met with Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukri. He is also set to meet with President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. This is Kerry's first Mideast tour that doesn't include a visit to Israel.

7. Benin is sending 800 soldiers as part of a regional task force to fight Boko Haram Takfiri militants. The multi-national force is formed to help boost a regional offensive against the terrorists that began in February. The offensive was launched after Boko Haram intensified its attacks in Nigeria.

8. A Burundian general has been killed in an ambush on his car in the capital Bujumbura. Reports say top general Adolphe Nshimirimana was attacked by gunmen in military uniforms. He was an aide to Burundian president Pierre Nkurunziza and in charge of his personal security.
