Memphis police officer fatally shot
A US police officer has been shot during a traffic stop in Memphis, Tennessee, and later died at a hospital, authorities say.
The officer was shot on Saturday night while conducting a traffic stop, according to Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong.
Officers received a call about 9:15 pm and went to the scene to see 33-year-old Sean Bolton shot multiple times, Armstrong said during a news conference.
“This is just a reminder of how dangerous this job is,” he said. "Sadly to say, we've been here before."
Police have begun a manhunt for the suspect, but so far nobody has been identified or arrested.
The incident marks the third time an officer has been fatally shot in Memphis during the past four years.
In July 2011, Officer Tim Warrne was shot and killed while responding to a shooting at a hotel downtown Memphis. Also, Officer Martoiya Lang was murdered while serving a warrant in December 2012.
A report by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has shown that over 11,000 people are murdered with a firearm each year in the US, and more than 20,000 others commit suicide using one.
