Bernie Sanders says he will definitely beat Hillary Clinton
US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders says there is “no question” that he can defeat former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination for the White House.
In an interview with Fusion and Univision that will be broadcast on Sunday, independent Senator Sanders said he is confident he has what it needs to become the president of the United States.
“We’re electable … we can win this thing,” he said. “One-on-one against the Republican candidates, we can win.”
“Every day we are doing better and better. We started off with a disadvantage, not a whole lot of people knew who I was. But every day I think there are more people who know who I am and what our program is,” Sanders stated.
“As people hear that, they’re saying: Yeah, that’s the kind of program we need,” he added.
Sanders describes himself as a "democratic socialist." The 73-year-old runs for office as an independent but caucuses with the Democratic Party and is counted as a Democrat for purposes of committee assignments.
The Vermont senator has previously noted that he’s the longest-serving independent member of Congress in US history. He was previously a member of the US House of Representatives from 1991 to 2007.
Sanders’ entry in the race gives Democrats at least one liberal alternative to Clinton.
In the latest interview, Sanders argued that by his stance on certain issues has forced Clinton and others to “respond to reality.”
He recently declared support for a national $15 minimum wage, and he stated that he believed the former secretary of state was “moving in that direction.”
