Iran has seized 10 Chinese fishing trawlers which had illegally entered the country’s territorial waters in the Sea of Oman, says an Iranian provincial governor.

An investigation is underway to determine the reasons behind the vessels' illegal entrance into Iranian waters at Chabahar Port, said governor general of Iran’s southeastern Sistan-and-Baluchestan Province Ali Osat Hashemi on Friday.

He said the Iranian Fisheries Organization's policy is to control trawling and that it has issued permits for fishing in vast stretches of water offshore.

Hashemi added that Iran pursues the same policy on foreign fishermen.

The official added that Iran welcomes investors and fishermen, but that their activities must be legal and in accordance with the Islamic Republic’s regulations.
